Review Panel 5/29/15

Yesterday, ArtCritical hosted a Review Panel at the Brooklyn Public Library for the season finale. Editor/publisher David Cohen moderated the discussion with guest critics Eva Díaz, Phoebe Hoban and Gregory Volk. The exhibitions under review that night were:

-Huma Bhabha: We Come in Peace, a roof garden commission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art... plus, her show at Salon 94 in the Bowery: Huma Bhabha: With a Trace.
-Carroll Dunham at Gladstone Gallery in Chelsea.
-Mernet Larsen: Situation Rooms at James Cohan Gallery in Chelsea.
-Tomás Saraceno: Solar Rhythms at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in Chelsea.

Two painters of the human figure. Two installations of distinctly different qualities. Subjects well defined with entirely distinct addresses. Cerebral. Gut punches. Social commentary via unusual addresses. All stamped decisively by personality. As longtime readers of my Review Panel Notes might have decoded, the pools of dark highlighting mark the negative comments. To my surprise, Carroll Dunham has been pocked with them. I say surprise, since artist luminary Richard Prince has gushed over Dunham's show in Twitter recently, saying that he wanted to buy a room of paintings. It's nice to be surprised.

I took notes...
